Since 2012, tutors in the Skyline Writing Center have conducted more than 8,000 sessions with their classmates in all subject areas at any stage of the writing process, built two outstanding partnerships with university writing centers at Eastern Michigan and the University of Michigan, produced six award-winning issues of Teen Spirit, Skyline’s literary magazine, held four Writing Prize competitions that have given away almost $1,000 to Skyline students, participated in substantial community service ranging from writing for local and national charities during our International Write-In to facilitating Family Literacy Nights at local schools, and engaging in meaningful, authentic project-based learning by producing training resources for Skyline tutors and tutors at other schools. These accomplishments earned the Skyline Writing Center the 2015 Educational Excellence Award from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and the 2015 Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti Regional Chamber E3 Award. In 2018, our director, Jeffrey Austin, became an inaugural member of the State of Michigan’s Innovative Educator Corps for his work with secondary school writing centers. With the award, he founded the Washtenaw County Writing Centers Project (WC2P) which helps schools build and sustain writing centers.
We are open for tutoring every hour of every school day. Skyline students can visit us in B429, teachers can invite us into their classrooms to work with individuals, small groups, and even their whole class, and we’re always happy to collaborate with classmates using Google Drive in our Online Writing Lab (OWL).
